About
APIaDay is the senior project of Ali Fairhurst, a student studying New Media at Purchase College in Westchester, NY.
The project: Beginning January 1st, 2013 Ali will create and publish a new web application every day using the open data provided by various web APIs. The APIs will range from government and institutional data to user-generated content from social media websites.
The lists: To provide some direction and structure, two lists will be created before January 1st: the list of APIs to choose from, and a shorter list of themes/tasks (data visualization, social tool, net art, etc.) to be chosen and paired with the day’s API.
The tools: The daily projects will mostly consist of PHP, HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript in conjunction with the XML and JSON data provided by the web APIs.
The purpose: The goal of this project is not just to build up programming and design skills or add to any portfolio. It is mostly intended to shed light to the vast amounts of data made available and easily accessible by government agencies, nonprofit organizations, social media platforms, and other websites. The project is also meant to provide an example of the various ways this data and information can be transformed by web developers of all skill levels.

This is awesome, Ali! Remember’s Peter’s project with the public photos? I dunno. I feel like do should really hammer hard with using public or semi-public information with most of your APIs. I’m really excited for your project and I’d totally would love to see what other application you’ll make each day~!
Good luck!
Thanks, Mo! I’d like to focus on government-issued public data for the most part- but I’m throwing in a few fun ones here and there as well.
